1st meeting:
After a phone call or email conversation, I will arrange to meet with mom & dad. The first meeting will take place anytime between 25-30 weeks. Whichever mom prefers. The sooner the better. The more time we have for getting to know one another. At this meeting we will sign the agreement of service. We will either look at your birthplan together if you have one or we can work on it together. We will discuss what your desires are for your birth. I will then go over what I do and don't do during my time of support for you. This meeting usually takes 1.5 - 2 hours depending on how much chatting we do! I love to talk by the way, especially about pregnancy & birth lol. At this meeting Dads are encouraged to attend. I am very flexible when I am able to meet you, so evenings & weekends are fine if your spouse is only home at those times. If he's not available its ok as well. You can keep him up to date on whats happening. At the end of this meeting I will have a good idea on what your needs & wants are. We will arrange to meet again before delivery. Either a visit with you to your Dr or another home visit. Whichever you prefer. closer to the end of your pregnancy. I am always available for phone or email chats anytime as well throughout the process if anything should arise that you need help with. Never hesitate to phone me.
2nd meeting:
This can either be a prenatal appointment or a home visit. If its a prenatal appointment I will accompany you then we'll go back to your place or for coffee to do our discussions. I will be considered on call at 36 weeks and will keep my phone on 24 hours a day at that point. This will probably be near the end of the pregnancy at about 36 weeks. We will discuss any fears you have any issues that have come up. We will go over details about when to phone me, go over any questions with your birthplan that may have came up since last meeting. Look at a video or 2 of labor & delivery. Answer any questions you have. Discuss the stages of labor, and any questions. Discuss what your spouses role will be and what my role will be. Some Dads want to only sit in the chair and watch. Others want hands on & just want me to watch and step in if he has to leave for a rest or break. Some dads may just need some suggestions on what to do to help you along. So I will guide him with the comfort measures we've talked about using with you. I am there to do whatever you want me to do, whether like I said previously its holding your hand, helping your spouse on what to do, or just being there. If you require another visit before labor we will arrange it at that time.
3rd meeting:
LABOR DAY!!!! Yeah. I want you to call me as soon as you think you are in labor. That gives me some time to get ready to be there for the long haul. At this point in your pregnancy, I will have most details worked out for my family. But I will still need an hour or so to get awake (in case of middle of night birth), or to arrange for the kids to come home after school. I will meet you at your place if you plan to labor at home for a while. Or if you are going straight to the hospital I will meet you there. Totally your choice where you want me to meet you. I will be prepared to stay with you to the end. I will give your spouse breaks so he can grab a bite to eat, or for him to rest a bit in the early part of labor. I will help you get settled in at the hospital and the fun will begin!! I stay with you until 2-3 hours after birth depending on your needs. Take some newborn photos and video for you. I help you with first feeds, help you get cleaned up if you want, or just hold the baby so you & your spouse can get a rest before I leave.
4th meeting:
I call you while you are still in the hospital to see how things are going and to see if you have any questions. I will come to the hospital if you are having any problems that you need help with. Even if you think its silly, thats what I'm here for. Make sure you tell me! I will then visit you after you have been home for a few days. Usually by one week at home.
5th meeting:
About 3-5 weeks postpartum. During the time between birth & this time you still can call or email me any questions that may have came up. I am still on duty for you and will help in any way needed. Even if its just an ear to listen. This meeting is a farwell visit and to see how you're family is adjusting. To see if there are any concerns with breastfeeding, your recovery, any infant issues, your postpartum moods, etc. I also give you your birth story and photos during this visit. I ask that you fill out an evaluation form and mail it back to me on how you think the whole process went and if there was anything I could have done better or anything I left out that you felt was important.
At any point during the process if you have any questions, I want you to call me right away. I have a cell I keep with me at all times. I have access to my email with that as well. Nothing is too silly. I'm here to make your life easier and to reassure you that you can do this confidently!! And you can have the birth you want!!
I don't care if you've just talked with me and I've just left, if something comes up and you need to talk, I'm here!!
I look forward to working with you and your family. The birth process is one of the most sacred parts of life and I feel so honored to be chosen to participate and have a part of this experience. I will do everything in my power to make sure all your wants, needs and desires are met to the best of my abilities.
